Sprint Weekends

Generally not a bad idea to freshen up the format especially in to a direction that makes it easier to watch for TikTok-Attention-Spans is good and very futuristic possibly making the sport more sustainable.

In the following article I will resolve the question whether F1 Sprint-Races are necessary and a good format or not.

Time Table

The fact, that drivers only have one single "Free Practice" Session to prepair for two Qualifyings, one Sprint and one Race while they normally have three free Practice Sessions for one Qualifying and the Race seems like very few preperation time for teams and drivers.

Sprint Weekends (Austria)

Friday Saturday Sunday
12:30 FP1 12:00 Sprint
16:30 SQ1-3 16:00 Q1-3 15:00 Race

Normal Weekends (Belgium)

Friday Saturday Sunday
12:30 FP1 11:30 FP3
16:00 FP2 15:00 Q1-3 15:00 Race

Adding to that comes the fact that if any of these Sessions have to get postponed like at Interlagos (Brazil) 2024 due to rain, there is very few spare time available.

"Interlagos-Weekends" (Brazil)

Friday Saturday Sunday
11:30 FP1 11:00 Sprint 07:30 Q1-3
15:30 SQ1-3 12:30 Race

Drivers who made it to Q3 had only four hours until the race would start

Too much strain?

2014

In 2014 there were 19 Races, in 19 Countries, distributed on 36 weeks almost all over the world with only Africa missing out on a Grand Prix since South Africa 1993. That makes an average of almost one race every two (1,89) weeks. To be fair the Date-Distribution was pretty terrible already with:
6. Monaco -> 7. Canada -> 8. Austria

2024

Compared to that there were five more (24) races, in only two more (21) countires ditributed on four more (40) weeks, still the only Continent missing out is Africa. At the moment that makes one race every 1⅔ weeks, which does not make that much of a difference BUT to come back to the Sprint races: if you take them into account as well we have 30 races in 40 Weeks making it one race every 1,33 weeks. Rounded that makes one race ervey week which is an enormous difference. Especially since the date Distribution hasn't become any better with still:

8. Monaco -> 9. Canada -> 10. Austria and

18. US -> 19. Mexico -> 20. Brazil -> 21. US

That adds the Question whether it is actually necessary to have multiple races in one Country

Due to rising competitiveness the pressure rises adding up to the strain. However we want to have see the best drivers of them all in F1 and people need more content to stay at F1 and not rather go to MotoGP, Nascar or other Motorsport competitions. So adding a smaller race at a location in use anyway adds content without traveling costs and all that much more time needed. But is that really the solution?

Conclusion

I personally have to say that I don't really watch Sprints since most of the time there does not happen a lot because teams don't need to pit and tracks not being meant for F1 cars to overtake. That seems pretty much representing the majority of fans since Sprint-Highlights only achieve half the views of the Race-Highlights.

Since teams lack time to evaluate their setup for the track and drivers lack time to get to know the track in general, I feel like the over all Quality of all four Events on Sprint Weekends suffers from it. The main idea of more content isn't generally bad, I just feel like Sprint races don't really bring an extra benefit, like there's nothing different in comparision to the normal race other than less tension.

I therefore say that Sprint races are unnecessary and are not the way to go for modern F1 but in the end, more people watch Sprint-Races than FP3 Sessions, so it brings more money to the table and thats all that counts in modern sports so we can't really do anything about it.
