One is the G.O.A.T. of the last decade, the otherone is a young-star.
In the Drivers Championship, both score pretty equal points but what makes them so different at the same time?
That is what Im gonna try to show you in the article down below, so have fun and enjoy. ;^)
Overall Standings
Position (Points)¹ | Driver | Theoretical Position (th Points)² | Position Difference (Point diff.) |
---|---|---|---|
1. (305) | Vertsappen M. | 1. (321) | 0 (-16) |
2. (266) | Norris L. | 2. (281) | 0 (-15) |
3. (229) | Leclerc C. | 3. (216) | 0 (+13) |
4. (225) | Piastri O. | 4. (197) | 0 (+28) |
5. (177) | Sainz Jr. C. | 6. (161) | +1 (+16) |
6. (162) | Hamilton L. | 8. (123) | +2 (+39) |
7. (147) | Russel G. | 5. (191) | -2 (-44) |
¹Only Race-Points, no Sprints or fast Laps included
²Points if every Driver would finish the position he qualified on
In the Table on your left, one can see that Hamilton should theoretically be 8th with a stunning 68 Points¹ gap to his Teammate Russel on 5th.
In reality however Hamilton is actually 15 Points ahead (Even 19 in the drivers Championship)
So to make it clear:
- Hamilton has gained 39 Points in the races of this season in comparission to his Starting Grid Position which is the best of all, while
- Russel lost 44 Points that way, which is BY FAR the most out of every competitor. Alonso is second with 23 lost Points, so only almost half that value.
Hamilton is gaining about 2 (2,059) Positions every Race, making him the third best behind Zhou (2,188) and Magnussen (2,476)
If you're interested in 'How Zhou gains the second most Positions, but still hasn't scored a Point' - feel free to check out my analysis on him.
Russel on the otherhand just averages 0,333 gained Positions per Race, which is even worse than Vertsappen, who started as first in 8 out of 18 Races.
But, that alone can't be it. Piastri only gains 0,222 Positions, but has gained 28 Points in races, which is second best behind Hamilton.
Qualifying
They only differ by 0.06s in Qualifying with Russel averaging a 0,627s gap to Pole versus Hamiltons 0,688s gap. Despite their very equal Qualifying performance, on average Hamilton starts from 8th and Tussel from 5th/6th.
After the Race, the Situation is almost perfectly mirrored, on average Russel finshes 8th while Hamilton finishes 6th/7th.
When comparing both of these graphics, it appears that Russel actually finishes in front of Hamilton in 10 out of 18 races so it's hard to see how the mentioned values show that Russel is Out-Qualifying Hamilton, while Hamilton is Out-Racing him.
But if you take a look at the "Positions gained" Graphic, one can see Hamilton is just constantly gaining Positions (12 out of 18 times) even if it's only 1 or 2, while Russel often looses 1 or 2 positions.
Conclusion
I think it's obvious that both drivers are good ones and both have their strengths, I just found it very impressive that the most Points gaining driver is the teammate of the most points loosing driver so I gave it a shot and looked at their data. It's also important to note that it's obiously easier to overtake a lot if you drive a quick car from somewehere in the midfield in to the points than if you start from the front and have to overtake Norris or Verstappen for example so as I said: I think that both drivers are good drivers in their one mannors but that it is funny how different two Teammates can actually be to score about level results
