Logan Sargeant against last place

Published on 4 August 2024 at 08:34

Logan Sargeant clearly isn't one of the best Drivers in the Grid and is often in the conversation for being the worst, but how bad is he actually?

Into the summer brake I did a quick recap of his performance visualizing his respective results as well as a comparision to his teammate and the two Sauber drivers who are just as pointless as he is after the 14th race of the Season.

Who is Logan Sargeant?

Logan Hunter Saregant, born in Florida in the year 2000 (23 yrs.) is currently driving his second consecutive season in F1. He scored a total of one point in both seasons combined which is the lowest amount of the entire (since 2023 unchanged) Grid. He went trough all regular steps of a Kartdriver Career from F4 all the way to now F1. In his last F2 Season in 2022 he finished 4. with two wins under his belt. His yet only F1 point he scored in 2023 in Austin. In the current 2024 season, which is 14/24 races deep, he is yet to score BUT Austin also is yet to come.
With 0 points to his name he shares the last spot in the drivers championship with two sauber pilots. His Teammate outscored him last season 27 to 1 and is now leading 4:0.
But he is actually the worst? You can presumably find out in this Blog Entry. Hope You enjoy.

Sargeants Results

If you simply look at his results, one could think that with finishing 17th or better more often than not, he can't be the worst driver of the 20 people grid, but if you take in to account how many drivers actually finished the race, you can see that he only avoided the last place by more than two places in Jeddah [Saudi Arabia] and at Silverstone [Great Britain].

Out of 14 races, L. Sargeant finished 11 and got dead last in 5 (almost half) of them.

Sargeants average result of 16,8 is only barely beneath the avergae last place with 17,9 but still he averages a one place gap to being last.

Humiliated by his own Teammate

It's clear to see that Sargeant doesn't stand a chance against his Williams Teammate Alexander Albon.

On average he finishes about 2,5 positions behind Alex Albon, only ending up in front of him, when his Teammate isn't able to finish the race.

While his Teammate consistently Qualifyes trough Q2, Sargeant fights to get out of Q1. Having to watch his Teammate drive his car in Australia because he crashed it on his own, obviously didn't make life easier for Sargeant, but nonetheless his Teammate keeps outqualifying him 14/0 with 3 Q3 iterations to 0 on Sargeants side.

Logan Sargeants One-Round-Pace for Qualifying isn't necessarily the worst and he definitely has a very strong Teammate with Alex Albon. Sargeant even averages a gap of about 1,5s to the back-end of the grid. Altough this value is clearly affected by the 12,7s gap to Pierre Gasly in Silverstone [Great Britain], he only qualified last in 3 out of 13 Qualifyings that he participated at. But not the worst doesn't make his qualifying-pace good.

The most comparable Driver obviously is the teammate because both drive the same car and Logan averages a 0,5s gap to his Teammate in the Qualifying sessions. Respectively Sergio Perez averages an about 1,5s gap to his RedBull Teammate Max Verstappen, but again; just because others are worse doesn't necessarily make his performance good.

The "No-Pointers"

The three drivers that are yet to score a single point are Sauber pilots Valteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu.

On average Zhou is slightly ahead of his Teammate, with an average result of 15,4 against Bottas' 15,5. Sargeant on the other hand, despite averaging a one place gap to last place, also averages more than a place gap to the next worst driver with his already mentioned 16,8 average race result.

Bottas won the competition between these three in 6 out of the 14 races while his Teammate won 5 with the higher average until the Austrian Grand Prix. Logan Sargeant only managed to finish ahead of both of the Sauber drivers in 2 occasions.

Conclusion

Despite his one place gap to last place, Logan Sargeant clearly sits at the back of the grid. Despite his decent Qualifying Pace with the competition on the driver market he very likely won't remain on the grid for 2025.

When I find some time, I will start a comparission with other "Back-End" drivers such as Marcus Ericsson to kind of predict his chances to compete in other Motorsports Series like Indycar.
